the Cushin Selective Filtering Insert dissipates shaft vibrations caused by ball impact, lessening the stress on bone, muscle and connective tissue. This produces better feel and reduces fatigue through the course of a round. My question is two parts.

a. how much of it is due to the “Custom Tuning Port” circular thermoplastic insert behind the face and

b. how much of it could be attributed to the “Cushin” vibration damping inside the shaft…which the salesperson didn’t know if it was on the club.

It seems that Tuning Port is on almost all of their clubs.
‘ve got tennis elbow and when I hit a golf ball with a steel shaft, the vibrations would travel up my arm and really bother me into the next day. Again, when I hit the Ping demos with a steel shaft, I don’t feel the vibes as much.

I’m trying to figure out how much of it is due to the Cushin inserts in the steel shaft and how much is due to the “Tuned Port” behind the head.

ANSWER:

‘m a certified ping fitter and it’s actually a little bit of both. Ping actually doesn’t push the “cushin” insert nearly as much as they used to. With the port you mentioned, that softens the feel quite a bit.

Whether the cushin insert was in the shaft or not I can’t tell you. Outside of the factor that the shaft band will have it written all over it, it’s hard to miss.

The cushin insert does make a steel shaft feel more like a graphite shaft, but it’s obviously still steel and you can get the zingers, just not as frequently.

and accuracy on tee boxes around the world, the G5 Driver carries its technology inside. The 460cc driver’s internal weighting system, which is achieved by moving eight grams of weight from the crown and face to the sole, ideally positions the center of gravity for lower spin and higher launch.

Designed to promote a right-to-left ball flight (left-to-right for left-handed golfers), the G5 Offset driver features a ¼” offset that blends subtly into the head for a clean appearance.

The precision-milled, variable-thickness face yields increased performance and high ball speeds across the clubface. A robotic plasma welding technique ensures consistency and durability. The precision of the welding process allowed our engineers to reposition four grams of weight on the sole to further reduce spin.

Internal weight pads toward the back of the driver create a low CG for a higher launch and reduced spin.

Weight from low stress areas in the crown is repositioned on the sole to lower the center of gravity and reduce spin rates. The web design (thinner sections divided by slightly thicker separation bars) of the weight removal area ensures the structural integrity of the clubhead.

I bought mine for $200 just as the G10 came out, worth a try at that price. It wasn’t a great honeymoon however, as I found the Aldila NV65 too wild and I put the G5 away in favour of an old R510. Finally I decided to reshaft the G5 with a Grafalloy Blue that I’d pulled from another club and, wow, did that make a difference! No more hooks, perfect trajectory, great carry & roll. That being said, with my shaft and loft set on a launch monitor, this one is close. Just as forgiving as any other 460cc clubhead and now with the new PING clubs out, you can get this one for a very decent price. Don’t waste your money on a new G10, this driver is the same except different in color. Take the money that you would spend on a $400 driver and go get on a launch monitor and determine what you need, then pick up a nice used G5 in the loft you need and have your fitting professional change the shaft to what the launch monitor says you need.
